UberMOTO: Paper cup advertising campaign in Chandigarh

One of the largest cab aggregators operating in India, Uber recently launched a bike taxi service in the city of Chandigarh. The service was first launched in Bangalore in March 2016, followed by Gurgaon, Goa, Noida, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Faridabad, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. As of July 2017, UberMOTO completed 2 million trips across these cities in India. The service soon will extend to Mohali as well.

With the growing number of two-wheelers on the road, looks like India is soon adopting the Southeast Asian style of bike taxis such as Go-Jek . It is popularly referred to as ‘Baxis’, and the base fare starts at Rs. 20 for the first 3 kilometres, followed by Rs. 5/km. Using UberMOTO not only helps commuters save time but also is a pocket-friendly medium for traveling, especially for short distances.

Nitish Bhushan, General Manager, Uber Chandigarh said that UberMOTO is a by-product of ‘Apni Gaddi Apna Rozgar’ scheme by the Punjab Government. Under the scheme, the government plans on providing commercial two wheelers to unemployed youth at subsidised rates. This initiative will further make bike taxis a source of livelihood for India’s youth.

Apart from UberMOTO, there are many other such bike taxi start-ups in India, namely – Baxi, M-Taxi, Rapido, Bikxie, Hey Bob, NOW Bike Taxi, among many.

How UberMOTO works?

Booking an UberMOTO ride is extremely simple, just like any other Uber rides.

  • Once the pickup location and payment method has been entered, riders receive details of the motorbike and driver.
  • The driver will have one helmet for themselves and one for the rider, as it is mandatory by law.
  • All the necessary passenger safety measures are taken by UberMOTO.
  • Every bike taxi is fitted with a GPRS system to track the movement of the two-wheeler.
  • At the end of the trip, the rider can pay by cash/credit card/debit card or any other payment mode accepted by the company.

UberMOTO is available only between 8AM – 10PM, 7 days a week.
